Eavor Announced as 1 of 6 market parties working to bring geothermal energy to the Netherlands
On November 24, 2020, a partnership was announced between the provinces of North Holland and Flevoland and the municipalities of Amsterdam and Haarlem in collaboration with EBN and the 6 market parties Eavor Technologies Inc., Vattenfall, Eneco, ENGIE, HVC, and Shell.
The agreement has been established as an important first step in exploring the geothermal potential and expanding the use of geothermal technologies in the region from Zandvoort to Almere for the purpose of heating homes and buildings. According to the EBN announcement, “The 6 market parties, together with the provinces, municipalities and EBN want to ensure that geothermal energy can be used as quickly as possible and in a reliable manner.” Affordability and support from local residents have been listed as key concerns when moving forward with geothermal energy exploration in the region.
Geothermal energy in the Netherlands has become a topic of increasing interest in recent years as the country aims to transition away from its reliance on natural gas towards sustainable alternatives. According to the Master Plan for Geothermal Energy in the Netherlands, released in May 2018, the country has set a goal to reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by 40% in 2030 compared to 2015, and by 95% by 2050.
ThinkGeoEnergy stated that in 2019, “geothermal energy in the Netherlands saved 168 million cubic metres of natural gas and 300,000 tons of CO2” (1). However, the majority of geothermal technology in the Netherlands currently exists in greenhouse horticulture projects, and large-scale utilization has yet to be implemented.
The announcement of the EBN collaboration represents a key step towards expanding geothermal energy applications in the Netherlands in order to accelerate the country’s progress towards achieving its emissions reduction targets in the coming decades.
